Quote: I cannot comprehend paying nearly $700 for a postmark.
Desirability in the eye of the collectors - as we know, rare items in the world of collectors fetch a handsome price.
Only 240,000 of the first watermark £2 kangaroo were printed and catalogue value for mint is $12,500 - $17,500. A desirable item, one of which sold for $3,800 (before add-ons) in this auction.
In comparison, only 1 or 2 of barred postmark 1022 were known to exist in major collections. A much rarer and very desirable item to a collector of NSW postmarks, selling for only $550 before add-ons.
