Interesting Kirk.
Million dollars? I guess it depends how he values them.

I recognize that #5 that is marked at $69,000 as one previously sold at Siegel for less.

To think someone was stealing from me. Such a betrayal. I would have taken the briefcase in with me.

I'm still choking over Siegel's "presentable and affordable"!

It was affordable to him. Now he is looking for a sucker who thinks it's presentable.

I guess his clientele are the folks with cents enough to throw money at a middleman and without sense enough to buy where the middleman buys.

He probably meant "retail asking prices totaling $1 million." I am a customer of David Cobb. He is an honorable dealer who has distinguished himself at many shows in Northern California by offering the highest-end material of all dealers at the show. His prices for at a level lower than this (stamps retail priced below $1,000) have always seemed fair to me.

I certainly sympathize with his loss and will make a point of making a purchase at his next show in the area. I believe I know which January show he is talking about in the article, and it's nearby. Maintaining proper security while going around the Western US selling this level of material must be a serious challenge and I hope he finds a way to continue traveling while maintaining security. He probably needs an armored van, or at least an armored safe bolted or welded into the trunk of his car.

Even if he is insured, they might deny him for being reckless and failing to exercise due care.

I've seen him at CHICAGOPEX for the past several years. I only ever bought one stamp from him as his prices are WAY high, at least in the area of U.S. Revenues.

Leaving such high end material unattended on a car seat could be preceived as not taking due diligence with respect to securing the material, i.e., careless. The article quotes him as using the term "we", implying there was someone else with him. If you have that much valuable material with you, you either eat in shifts or you go drive-through.

Dumb.

Your advice reminds me of Wilson Pickett's story of the notoriously suspicious Ike Turner's insistence on early payment from theatres/clubs when on the road. The cash would then be kept in a safe in the boot of his car. "They stole the car", guffawed Pickett.

Peter,

Knowing insurers as I do, I know they try to wiggle out of anything. My wife hit a deer last year and I got hosed by my insurer. I had this carrier for over thirty years and dropped them after it was over.

Is the dealer well known? Did he have a bad show in Las Vegas? It is possible that he set this up..
"we'll stop at Henderson and go in the diner, bust out the car window and take the large suitcase on the back seat" We'll meet up after the insurance settles my claim."

...60 seconds on google would show he is a far more honourable dealer than you give credit for... *** Edited by Staff - Please Review the rules that you agreed to when you registered. ***

64idgaf, don't be so sure. Everything is possible; facts are not established yet. I am as much reluctant to exonerate people without evidence, as I hate to accuse them without evidence.

You are welcome to feel indignation about any subject of your choice. However, no level of moral indignation, however justified or fantasized, should allow you to attack others with insults. These days people seem not to understand that, to sit on high moral horse, one has to be, first of all, a gentleman.

Bsides, the spelling is "diarrhea."

Innocent until proven guilty. There is absolutely nothing to suggest a long standing, well regarded stamp trader is anything more than careless (as far as you can be with 7 figures of stock). What evidence other than ill-founded speculation do you have?

I live in Australia where, by and large, we have not corrupted the Queen's English the way you Americans have.

Diahorrea is correct, as in colour, honour and besides.
