GVI 1d pale scarlet of 1941, one of the paler wartime printings necessitated by ink shortages . It's kept its value - it's still worth a penny.

Not sure where cents, dollars or orange come into this...? Red is a notoriously fickle colour and can both wash after soaking and fade in the light. Optimism costs nothing, however!

This is the King George VI 1d (one penny) red introduced in Britain in !937. It could be SG 463 scarlet (Issued 10 May 1937) or more likely SG 486 light scarlet (Issued 11 August 1941). The light scarlet version was intended to reduce the cost of production by cutting down on the amount of ink used. The lighter colour of ink does tend to make it look a bit more orange.

Just a word about the currency. At the time of this stamp, Britain used the Sterling system of the pound, shilling and penny (plural is pence). The pound (symbol £) is made up of 20 shillings (symbol s or / or sometimes sh) and the shilling is made up of 12 pence (symbol d). So:
Five pounds is £5.
Two shillings can be either 2s, 2sh or 2/- (The dash at the end says there are no pence involved.)
Sixpence is 6d.
Two shillings and sixpence can be 2s 6d or 2/6 with no d needed.
Five pounds, two shillings and sixpence can be £5 2s 6d or £5/2/6 but you don't need to know this for collecting stamps. Britain's pre-decimal stamps of £1 or more were in whole pounds only.

The £sd or Lsd system goes back to the Romans and their currency units of librae, solidi and denarii.

All of the madness disappeared when Britains currency went metric with £1 equal to 100 new pence. The symbol for the penny became p.

Here endeth the lesson!
