Hi,
I would like to know if anyone has come across any CHICAGO ILLINOIS precancel spelling errors before? I have a Postage Due stamp with the CEICAGO ILLINOIS precancel spelling error.

Just a wild guess...but maybe the H in cHicago looks like an E because of an ink transfer issue with the precancel. The H is easily an E when the ink is not fully met with the stamp paper.

Just my intuition. Feel free to correct me if im in error.

Phil is right on the spot. If we hide the lower part it's really easy to see a h

An easy mistake to make. The near-total absence of the right side of the H, combined with the heavy and fairly even inkspots between the serifs...it would have fooled me. And the fact that the precancel is inverted makes it easy to believe that everybody was having a bad day that day. :)

Does the inversion make the stamp worth more?

Damon, hang on to this stamp. I am not at all convinced you made a mistake - we have to see if Chasa rings in to give us his opinion.

When the image is enlarged it is more obvious as an H, not an E. I think that the pre-cancel was applied with a hand-stamp which was not properly inked, or slightly damaged.

I agree with Phil and BK - just a smudge, collectable but not an error.
