In 1800 there were only 89 steam engines in Lancashire, Yorkshire and Cheshire.

Competition for the rapid transportation of letters and passengers,
led to road improvement.
In 1754 it took 4 ½ days to travel from London to Manchester.
In 1788 it had been reduced to 28 hours.
