Indeed.
What fills me with amazement, is the forward thinking of Dean Colet.

By comparison, in 2016 the Daily Telegraph reported that families earning up to 120,000 were being offered bursaries after the headmaster declared that the school had become "unaffordable".[19]

Between 1886 and 1895, St Paul's boys won 173 entrance awards at Oxford and Cambridge, which was 26 more than any other school.[citation needed] Over many years its record of Open Awards at Oxford and Cambridge in all subjects has been equal, or superior, to that of any other school of comparable size.[citation needed]

Great Britain
The Industrial Revolution

Some numbers.

The Census of 1801
England and Wales 9,168,000

London over 1,000,000
Next Manchester 137,201

England 8 towns larger than 50,000
Only 2, Bristol and Plymouth were in the South

For decades the Industrial revolution was Rural

In 1800 there were only 89 steam engines in Lancashire, Yorkshire and Cheshire.

Competition for the rapid transportation of letters and passengers,
led to road improvement.
In 1754 it took 4 days to travel from London to Manchester.
In 1788 it had been reduced to 28 hours.

The Post Office, 1833-style. Not sure which auction lot of old paper this came with.

I think the taste for shorter paragraphs is a later development.

Yes, sorry, the compression needed to upload reduced the legibility, which I didn't realise until too late. I'll re-scan and send them to you in the next few days.

"Tread your own path"
Dismiss the elitist demeanings, you often hear
"Dunes" "Wallpaper" etc
Collect whatever gives you joy.

These disrespectful terms often supply the user with a perceived
elevation from other collectors.
We can spy them from a mile off.

Great Britain : Revenues.

Early Stanley Gibbons..........
"Do not sully your collection with these revenue stamps,
instead collect proper stamps"

"Quite snooty toward revenue stamps"

Then they blame Central America

Finally the elitists are taken to task.
