Indeed, thanks. I was thinking of the busts of India issues. Certainly the same as KGV Edward appears without a Crown at all.

Fascinating! Thanks Geoff, was news to me. William Wordsworth once worked as the distributor of stamps for Westmorland. From 1813 At first there were six denominations of stamps, but newer stamps of different values continually appeared as the duties on documents kept. |

£400 a year was a lot. I wonder if he did any work, or if it was a sinecure? |

I'd suggest a lot of work, acting as a sort of postmaster, receiving funds which would have required a high amount of trust. I found very little regarding the duties of a distributor of stamps. About this Item 1 page. 8vo. A letter pertaining to Wordsworth's duties as newly appointed distributor of stamps for Westmorland and the Penrith area of Cumberland. "In obedience to the orders of the Board I have given you the above acknowledgement. The account will be found to differ from that of which I before gave an acknowledgement . viz, 6 Medicine Licenses at 10/ which I have deducted" etc, closing, "N.B. the stamps sent to me by you are also given credit for in this account." Wordsworth was granted the position in April 1813, which did much to alleviate the Wordsworths' financial difficulties. The letter is dated the month after the Wordworths moved to Rydal Mount, following a difficult five year period which culminated with the death of two of their children in 1812. "In May 1813 the family moved to Rydal Mount, a house on rising ground just south of Grasmere, owned by Lady le Fleming of Rydal Hall. It did not disappoint . Rydal Mount was commodious, with a fine view over the head of Windermere, and it became the Wordsworths' permanent home" (ODNB). Old folds. Matted and framed with cdv of Rydal Mount and portrait of Wordsworth. Seller Inventory # 315381 £3000 https://www.abebooks.com/Autograph-...952299462/bd |

Great link, thank you.
I have used Pear's soap all my life, to this very day. The old brown, slippery soap tablet, with that unique perfume.

Royal Mail's profit should jump? There should, I expect 1000's of people who shan't bother returning their valids, and they will gradually disperse through the collectors hands over the following years.

I don't think so. Royal Mail will have allowed a figure for stamps held, but not used. This will reduce that number, but, there again, stamps in people's homes will now be used or returned, creating a loss of new sales or a new cost respectively. As commemoratives aren't affected, there won't be a panic rush to use or swap fifty years'-worth of those. |

Rod - Here is an old cover from my collection with a nice Pateley Bridge cancellation with a C15 killer, for the topic and for your records. I love this thread, thanks for sharing the knowledge. Linus Note: Oio = Ohio...one of the 50 states, old time spelling. |
