An absolute newbie question - Postage due Scott #J74. I have an example of this that appears to have a Bureau precancel from Knoxville, TN. I have the PSS database and Stiener pages, will have the PSS catalog soon. I do not see anywhere that there are Bureau precancels for postage due. Is that the case? Thanks for your response Paul
This has been posted about several times before. You will find posts with pictures on this forum. Short answer is that sometimes these stamps were used to pay for business reply mail. They were not used as postage due.
Jackblack, just to clear this up. The holder of a Business reply permit would go to the post office to pick up his incoming mail. The post office would then count up the owed postage and paste that amount in the form of postage due stamps to a receipt, collect the amount and cancel the stamps on the receipt. Sometimes they would paste complete sheets of these on a receipt, depending on the amount owed.
