This domestic rate ("kiwi") stamp of private courier New Zealand Mail (NZM) depicts Mount Sunday, New Zealand. 08/11 inscription at bottom right of stamp indicates that this an August 2011 printing. From atlasobscura.com, "When J.R.R. Tolkien was writing his description of Edoras, the capital city/fort of the kingdom of Rohan, he most likely had no idea he was essentially describing New Zealand's Mount Sunday. Nestled in the Canterbury Plains of South Island, Mount Sunday feels worlds away from civilization. But, in reality, this majestic spot is only about two hours away from Christchurch." |
