Great Smoky Mountains are a subrange of the Appalachian Mountains, a major mountain range in the southeastern United States. Most of the rocks in the Great Smoky Mountains consist of Late Precambrian metamorphic rocks.

Maroon Bells are two peaks (elevation 4317m and 4273m) in the Elk Mountains in western Colorado. The peaks are composed of Permian mudstone which is responsible for its distinctive maroon color.
