Lindbergh Flown Covers

Hi Mpobe.

You have a very nice cover but it was not flown by Lindbergh. It is just a commemorative souvenir of his stopping in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. There were some covers that he actually flew in the Spirit of St. Louis but they are postmarked February 7, 1928 at Port-au-Prince and they have a back stamp at Havana, Cuba dated February 8. These actually flown ones all have a special circular red ink Haitian "Par Avion" cachet to the front. If you look at my Dominican Republic to Haiti cover in my post earlier in this thread you will see what that red circular Par Avion Haiti cachet looks like on the left side of my cover. The Haitian Post Office applied to both the incoming Spirit of St. Louis flown mail such as the one I have shown as well as on the outgoing Haiti to Cuba Spirit of St. Louis mail. You can tell a cover that was actually flown from Port-au-Prince by the January 7 postmark, the added red circular Par Avion cachet and the January 8 receiving postmark in Havana.

Your cover was one of a large number made by dealer E.A. Colson to "commemorate the event" that he addressed it to himself in the US (the E U on the address stands for Etats Unis or United States).

Your purchase price of $7 was okay but it is a full price for it as an unflown commemorative cover.

Having the American Air Mail Catalogs in your home philatelic library can be very useful and a good investment as this kind of information is included there. This particular information on these unflown commemorative covers is found on page 1424 of Volume Three of the Fifth Edition in the Lindbergh section.

Here is what the back of the Haiti to Havana cover flown in the Spirit of St. Louis should look like. For some reason they applied the cachet to the back rather than the front of this leg of the flight. Very roughly translated the French can be translated as "First Trip by Air Port-au-Prince to Havana Special Lindbergh Trip on Board the Spirit of Saint Louis"

Here's my contribution from my grandfather to my grandmother. The letter is still there, and towards the end my grandfather apologizes for cutting it short to try and get it to Lindy.

Any value to these Lindbergh Cuban Stamps? Any catalog numbers?

These are Scott C1 (blue) and C2 (overprint). 2018 catalog prices for MH single are $7.75 and $6.00, respectively. Unlikely to be a premium for a block of 4.
