Which SG catalogue have you been using?

I see (in SG Part 2, 2009):

Type 2:

SG 14-19 1874-80 recess - no watermark

SG 25-28 1881 recess plate 1 - sharp triangles

SG 29-32 1890 recess plate 2 - blurred or missing triangles

Type 4:

38a-38i typo (litho background) 1888 printed from stereotypes

39-51 typo (litho background) 1889-98 printed from electrotypes

SG includes diagrams and several paragraphs of description to distinguish the stereotype and electrotype stamps by means of characteristic flaws and other details.

goodness me, that is the type of information I was after.

In doing so, you have exposed me!
I prefer Scott, but go to Gibbons as a last resort
I was looking at 1965 Gibbons Vol ll, Europe and Colonies.

Obviously way, way out of date!
You would have thought in the intervening years, between 1914 and 1965
more info had come to hand.

Perhaps illustrates how the depth of knowledge in the IT era, is expanding at a fabulous rate, due to the easy transfer of knowledge.

This is one of many designs that I haven't yet got round to sorting out in my collection.

It has all the usual complications (watermark, perf, shade) along with the stereo/electro difference.

Here's a more complete breakdown with two more watermark (W) types and a correction to include "partly missing triangles".

I see (in SG Part 2, 2009):

I assume the following Type 4 stamps are also typo (litho background):

52A-63A 1898 medium white paper - W 6a (crown in oval)

52B-63B 1899 thinner yellowish paper - W 6b (crown in circle)

SG mentions (but doesn't list) two versions of watermark W 3 which differ in the height of the letter "k".

I have around 60 of these stamps including duplicates so I have a long way to go!

I guess this may stay on my "too hard" list unless I treat SG 52-63 as a single set.

My "too hard" list already has quite a few entries including the paper differences in the Portugal and Colonies "Ceres" stamps and the watermark differences in the South Australia W 10 and W 13 stamps.

Perhaps Wmk 20 and 21 here, is what you mean?

These are the Crown over SA watermarks on the 1d and 2d stamps of 1868-76 and 1876-1904 (SG 152-180). In Scott they are watermarks 72 and 73.

I guess mine will all be common stamps with the second Crown over SA watermark (with S and A closer together) from the 1876-1904 set (SG 167-180).

I'll try again some day but the last time I had trouble making out enough of the watermarks to decide which ones they were.

Indeed, that is a wonderful source of background information
a BIG read. Shall take some time.

My first challenge is to get every stamp in its SCOTT order
then use these studies for the finer points.
Awaiting my Catalogues which are in the mail.

Hungary Date Codes Year /Month/Day ?

If you refer to issuing date - some are Issued on 1946-01-14, some Issued on 1946-02-01, Expiry date 1946-06-30.

I meant on Postmarks.
eg: 97 Sept 13 has to be Yr Mth Day (The Perfin)
but I thought I had seen one, that did not fit.
Thinking p'haps the code style had changed over the years.
I'll keep an eye on that one.

mildly surprised, I would have thought more of a German Influence
from Hungary.

Query:
The gender honorific "Herr" on that cover is crossed,
what is the replacement ? Any ideas?
