This October 9, 1992 stamp of Japan (Sc. #2144) depicts a child's drawing or painting of a cat with three small birds on its back. It is from a set of 2 stamps showing the winners of Japan's third Postage Stamp Design Contest. This artwork was done by Tomoko Komoto of Kamakura City.  |

Japan began its tradition of "letter writing day" as the 23rd of each month in 1979, and stamps are issued annually to publicize the occasion. On July 23, 1996 two stamps (Sc. #s 2532-3) were issued for letter writing day, a 50 yen value and an 80 yen value. The 50 yen stamp depicts a cat sleeping on a mailbox.  |
