I have a cover with a John Paul Jones stamp. I do not know how to count perforations yet. Can someone help me with this stamp on the top and bottom? Also there are numbers A0001 at the top is that important? I also want to know about the red lines? If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it! Photographs attached.
Thanks

Hi Sharons. Perforation counting is not a very scientific undertaking. If you want to measure the perfs on this stamp you will need a perforation gauge. The number A0001 is the plate number,
Sharons - the plate number is the serial number of the printing plate used for a particular stamp. These numbers are often in the margin, although nineteenth century British stamps often had the plate number within the design of the stamp itself.
