Hello,

time for me to open a new thread here - it seems that I am one of the more active users here in the US precancels forum :). Sorry, but I hope that some of the precancels I show are also interesting for other collectors and my questions help others, too.

I learned in the meantime to identify the more easy types, so here some more difficult and interesting ones.

1 and 2: no precancels?
3: is blue ink an own type or the same type as black ink here?
4: type 71 or 75? The lines are 9mm apart and the state not spelled out.
5: type L-15 HS? The letters are 2mm away from the lines.
6: nice cancel artefact at the right, isn't it?
7: type L-35 IHS? Two types on one stamp and an additional line?
8: type 232 or 235? The lines are 15mm apart, and it seems to be the three rows version but with only two rows and one empty.
9: ending with a comma instead of a period?

Many questions again, but also many interesting precancels, I think.

Thank you for any help.

1 not a precancel
2 yes, it is the same as 3.
3 same PSS #, colored inks exist, no premium
4.75&76 have narrower spacing, seen on 8c liberty's only
5. L-15
6. yes, random ink
7. probably L-35
8. PSS-232
9. yes, that is what the footnote-5 means in the catalog

Thank you. It seems that I am getting better in identifying the types...

I'm not sure how to read the PSS catalogue then, so how much variation is normal for the types?

4. The types 75 and 76 don't have a 9mm spacing like this stamp and the state is not spelled out here
5. The letters at L-15 are much closer to the lines than on this stamp
8. The line spacing for 232 is 12 to 13.5mm, but 15mm on this stamp, while this would fit fine for 235

also 2. and 3. have completely different line spacing.

So I actually look at differences here you can see without measuring and ruler.

sorry 2&3 are not the same type, as you mentioned, both are L-types and hard to distinguish from scans
4 - not 75/76 so yes 71 (is what I meant to say)
5 - L-15 has a few varieties, this is one of them (pictures of the varieties in the current T&T catalog)
8 - some clarifying remarks will be added in the 8th T&T edition, this is the common variety

good questions all !

ok thank you - then:

4: 71 has line spacing 10.5mm, my stamp has 9mm, also a "variety" of 71 then?
8: what will be (more or less) the remarks in the new catalogue: that there is a variety of 232 with line spacing 15mm - or that this stamp and town also comes with 235 without middle line?
7: forgot to ask if this is different inking then and not different types (as the one font is bold)?

4. dunno, suggest you re-measure and scan/post with the mm gauge shown
8. I forget if they are going to change the specifications for PSS-232 or something else, this is the listed type
7. inking variation

hi chasa,

sure you can get the scan (see the ruler on the left) - and I have to admit that it's not 9mm but just exactly 10mm :), sorry for that, I only remembered that it was no ".5mm". But the 10mm does not make the stamp less interesting, I think, as there is no 10mm line spacing either in type 71, 75 or 76. What do you think?

So also here the question how exact the type definition in the PSS catalogue is to read and when such a difference leads to a footnote or not or another type or subtype...

Same issue and question here: I can't figure out any local precancels for them, so it should be:

Brockton 225: bars should be 12mm apart - this stamp: 11mm
Indianapolis 61: bars should be 13mm apart - this stamp: 12mm
Baltimore 71 (above): bars should be 10,5mm apart - this stamp: 10mm

So is this "bars apart" thing in the PSS catalogue something more exact or are the bars very often in different distances, for exammple for sheet vs. coils? Then I would not have to look too close to this anymore.

To expand on the Indianapolis type 61 precancel, using the 10 cent for clarity of image, it is clear the precanceling plates/mats for the coils and the sheets have slightly different bar spacing, although both are typed as Type 61.

Yes, thank you - and it's even not the same type exactly :). I just copied a bit in your image. I also asked myself which type my 5c Indianapolis has, as it's not really matching the 61, as you see in your own stamps. The town of 61 is shorter and higher.
