https://www.linns.com/news.html#I hope no one thinks I am being nit picky, but wouldn't you think a spelling error this evident would stand out to anyone posting it on a publication's website? How did this get by the proofreaders? Update, 'Irruption' is apparently a real word. I have never encountered it in my life so guess I can be forgiven for assuming an error on Linn's part. Interesting!

Online dictionary defines "irruption" as "a breaking or bursting in; a violent incursion or invasion. 2. Ecology. a sudden increase in an animal population". So perhaps the author is correct. |

Hi stamps1962. I am a proofreader for a stamp journal. It is downright amazing how one can read a piece several times and not spot a very common mistake or spelling problem

I did not realize it was a word... it was intentional.
From the article....
A snowy owl irruption is taking place in the United States, which means that these Arctic raptors (Bubo scandiacus) are being found much further south and in much greater numbers than normal.
Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines an irruption as "a sudden sharp increase in the relative numbers of a natural population usually associated with favorable alteration of the environment." |

I usually think of myself as having a good vocabulary, but I had not encountered that term before.

Guess you could consider this an irruption ... no, make that interruption ... in the current topic. Jkjblue: Merry Christmas from another bird-watching stamp collector! |

English has been changing since its beginnings in the 5th century when it evolved from other languages. |

Actually, contemplating the departure from the common vernacular has had a secondary consequence, in that the plethora of concern for the use of a term, which while perfectly correct, caused the group some real consternation as they held discourse as to the veracity of the spelling of the term, only to discover it was, indeed, both grammatically and textually accurate. The real genius in using a term outside the normally perfunctory usage was to create discussions about it, and the article, something which every writer hopes will happen. |

English - and all languages - changes all the time, as it should. (though it should be FARTHER south; not "further") |
