I know that the value in the upper margin id the cost per sheet for these stamps, but can anyone tell me what, if anything significant, the markingd in the left-hand margin mean?

These are markings to count of the value of the stamps. Easier for the clerk to see how much he has left
Now I will go and learn ho to read a question!

Thanks. Peter. It is the "11X 82", "231X82" and "5 X92" notations that I am enquiring about, not the 10.-, 9.- and 8.50 sheet values.

My first guess would be that that they are added to the sheets as they are printed for inventory control purposes. It would, however, be interesting to know what they actually signify, eg: perhaps "11X 82" means the 82nd sheet in the 11th print run.

Thanks, Kuhli. That is probably it, given that they were released in February 1983.

Should you have more of these Swiss definitives, pay some attention to the gumming! Widely striped or narrowly striped!

Galeoptic:

I only have this and one other set. My work took me to Geneva 3 times every 2 years and I would buy stamps with my pocket change at the airport on the way out.

I am not familiar with gum striping. What should I be looking for?

Frank.

Ps: Switzerland is not a country that I normally collect.

I confirm, the indications on the left are indicating the date of the printing.
