I am new to this forum and to stamp collecting so I apologize if this is not right. inherited a stamp collection from a 93 year old woman who was going to throw them all away so I rescued them. I looked this one up and it appears that it is a #703b, am I correct or way off base?
thank you

Welcome termn8r,

To my eyes it looks like #703.

I'd be interested to see what else you have

Welcome.
Getting stamp color feedback online is dicey since an image can look differently on every monitor. It is like when a television commercial for another television. If your television is an older 1970's analog model when you see a commercial for a sharp new HD television then you are still viewing it on a 1970's analog screen. Even worse many people either scan, save, and otherwise manipulate the images they post so this can also make opinions less than accurate.

That said, I agree with Bobby De La Rue and do not think it is a #703b (Dark Lake and Black) based upon the image you posted. Here is a #703b (again with online image posting qualifications), to judge the lake color look at solid areas around the numerals.

Thank you so much for the replies. As I said I am new to stamps and realized it is not as simple as you would think. I am so intrigued by the history of the stamps more so than the value, though it would be nice to find one of some value

termn8r, hang in there. And welcome to this forum. Eventually you will run into something valuable especially if you do not specifically look or it. Amazing how many treasures you can find in for instance APS circuit books.

Welcome to the forum...

You need a Scott US Specialized catalog to find these...

1st 2 are cutouts (cut squares) of US Postal Stationery. Common...

3rd one a Playing Card revenue. Common as far as I know - one of our revenue experts will chime in if it isn't!

4th an overprinted documentary revenue, with a cut cancellation. Common.

5th a US Postal Service 'seal'. Common.

Last is a US Official - looks like a stamped envelope cutout. Again, folks with greater expertise will respond with more detail on this - but I have one as well - not a rare item.

Post some more!

Thank you! As I am going through all these stamps I am sad at the condition of them. The person that I inherited them from stored them away in a closet in the laundry room. I believe some of them could be quite a good find if they were in better condition. Would it be better to not even have them if they are in bad condition? They still fascinate me just given their age and all though. Here are some examples

Oh boy...here we go!

All cool stamps. Yes - damage is a shame - but a few are in good shape. Nothing wildly exciting on the surface....except that first one!

The 2c red Washington - first one you have listed. If it was a 'real' coil, it has a catalog value of $250,000. Unfortunately, yours is a fake. Someone took an imperforate stamp & tried to create a valuable rarity. A decent attempt, but not that good...
