Great selection of perfins, 1775mac!
These are precancels that just happen to be used by companies that used perfins. These are not listed in any precancel catalog, but may be listed in a perfins catalog.

As I mentioned, djd has shown another genre all together. It may be call a local "commemorative" or "souvenir" precancel they principally are used in relation to local Philatelic events. These almost always privately applied with tacit or no approval from the general post office. These are not well documented, but often command a premium at auctions.

mac, that is a very nice selection of precanceled perfins. I noticed a few that would look nice in my Route 66, Lincoln Highway, and Abraham Lincoln collections. |

Mike that was a great help on the site. There actually is a collectors niche for these with information. Heads up Phil.
U.S. Perfinned Precancels Randall, John M.; Cummings, William. 1991. Catalog of Perfinned Precancels of the United States. El Cerrito, CA: The Perfins Club. [231p.]
Josh- I already have most of these going to Phil but I am sure he can get you the ones you may need. Sorry about that. |

Mac, No problem if they were already spoken for. Heck, I figured you were keeping them in your collection.
Phil, I think it was the South Bend IN & San Franciso CA for my next project: Lincoln Highway and one from Lincoln NE for my Abe collection that really caught my eye. I did see a few Chicago IL & Saint Louis MO for my Route 66 collection (which I have quite a few-nonperfin). Other than that it was hard to tell if some of the others are on my ever growing lists.
khj, very nice set of dualing pianos. |

I see on the The Precancel Stamp Society website that they have a hard copy silent precancels catalog. Anyone know if they have any plans to release it as a pdf and/or database? |

So...there's a series such as the Transportation Series in which a few are precanelled and the rest simply normal stamps. How do most collectors handle this ? Are the precancelled grouped separately in one's collection? I realize that each collector makes his own decision; I'm simply asking how most do it ? |

In the Transportation Series all of the precancels are available as "for collectors" unprecancelled stamps. Then there are the later ones, that are "service inscribed" as the USPS calls them. As you state one can collect these either way. I collect the series specialized and my tagged stamps and the precancels are all mixed in.

dkabq8: as far as I know the Dave Smith Silent Precancels book will not be made into a computer readable pdf or database.

@chasa: Bummer, as I really like the PSS software -- both for keeping inventory and generating album pages. It has been worth every penny. I guess I will have to purchase the hard copy sometime in the near future. |
