Hello again,

once again I have precancels I can't really figure out for sure.

4c Lincoln: seems to be NY, but can't find any town similar.
6c Washington: L-4 or L-7 ?
9c Alamo: also NY, seems to be ending with "...dale" and beginning with "Sa..." - no idea.
2c Jefferson: should be PSS 61, but the font is bold, more spaced and a bit larger than the other PSS 61 I show (just for comparison).

thank you again...

9c Alamo appears to be Farmingdale, NY which is located on Long island

My general rule of thumb is that if I can't read it, I'm not bothering with it. 95% of precancels are in the .15-.50 range, so the likelyhood of finding a rare one are pretty remote.

For those you do have, and if you are serious about precancel collecting, I'd highly recommend joining the Precancel Stamp Society. They have several catalogs available through their website, as well as a good monthly journal.

thank you all, now I know everything about them I wanted to know. It's Farmingdale indeed.

Stampman: well, for me it's like that: when I find a stamp with a precancel you can hardy read or even does not look like a precancel at first sight, this is a stamp I especially spend more time with, as I suppose that most people who looked at it before just were like you :).

I find great satisfaction in conclusively identifying a stamp, cover or precancel, etc. The Farmingdale, NY stamp took less than 10 minutes to ID via an internet search. It was readable enough to figure where to begin the search. For me, it doesn't matter if the item is monetarily worthless or valuable; it is the "thrill of the hunt".

I was not trying impugne anyone else's collecting or how they pursue it, so if I came across that way, you have my sincere apologies.

I'll see if I can find some of these which I had put aside, and when I do, I'll offer them up to those who like the thrill of the hunt, gratis.

Give me a few days to rummage around in my various tubs, boxes, bins, binders, albums, and other hideyholes to find them. I'll let you know when I have them in hand.
