1898 WATERMARKING
Any members have any tricks for these?
Dashed if I can see any, esp with strong Pmks.
Ronsonol is useless, as one can see through the stamp.
SIGNASCOPE was of no use.

I've been struggling with the same issue when trying to sort out my Brazilian definitives. I've had to clean hinges etc off a lot of them and the watermarks seem to be totally legible on every stamp when I soak them but the watermarks of some mysteriously vanish when they're dry

As I have quite a few copies and most are worth very little, if I can't detect the watermark from the dry stamp I simply put the offending stamp in the "No ID" packet. Fortunately a lot of the watermarks are decipherable one way or another using a raking light or simply laying them on a dark surface. For the occasional valuable issue I am considering whether it's worth re-soaking, the number of possibles is manageable

Been there.
when I soak, I use the sandwich method,
when they come out the water, I place like watermarks, in each sandwich,
with a scrap of paper indicating what wmk.

They are indeed difficult.

Not yet tried the early China in water.

Rod,

Customs revenue for Jiangsu.

Right column 2 characters top to bottom: customs
Top row 2 characters, right to left: Jiangsu
Left column 2 characters top to bottom: designated use (i.e., "for use only"...)

EDIT: corrected/clarified last 2 lines

Thanks, Rod!

My mind was partially elsewhere when I typed the reply and I typed 1 line incorrectly while the last line could have better word choice for clarity. I have already corrected it in the above post:

Top row 2 characters, right to left: Jiangsu
Left column 2 characters top to bottom: designated use (i.e., "for use only"...)

Northeastern Provinces
I like to work with Scott "Types"
It looks like these stamps also have a type as "OS2" (North China) along with "A1" ? I wonder if identical vignette?

Look similar to Gibbons Type NC5 etc, unissued stamps prepared for the Japanese occupation of Mengjiang.
