A beautiful "World at Peace"; the birds share holding the world umbrella. Great Britain 1983

(Hi Rod, Nice info on the folding umbrella - in German we call it the "Knirps", which means the little one. I was saving this stamp for the snow thread, but it's even better here, especially in February. K.)

The stamp reproduces a painting Lady Returning from Bathhouse by ukiyo-e artist Torii Kiyonaga (1752 - 1815). It shows a traditional oriental umbrella made from oil-paper and bamboo.

Peter,
You possibly are correct,
In my mind's eye, I see them different, however for the sake of the thematic, I see "umbrella" as a device for enclosure and protection, be it sun, rain or otherwise.

More eloquent members, may be able to offer more precise opinions.

Hurrying home after school in the rain, barefoot. Semi-postal for youth projects, 2000. The artist Albert Manser (1937-2011) did the drawings for numerous children's books about Swiss rural life, and wrote the most famous ones himself.

Francisco de Goya (1746 in Spain - 1828 in France) painted a young woman reading a letter, her companion is struggling with an umbrella. The painting can be admired in the Art Museum of Lille. (For the fun of it: this stamp was issued for the Day of Stamps and shows a letter which was surely delivered without a stamp!)

(Hi Kuol, The child under the umbrella holding a snowflake on a string seems odd because there is plenty of snow up in the Cypriot mountains. K.)

In 2015 France issued a booklet of "Happy Vacation" stamps. This particular one shows that you can enjoy any kind of weather if you have the right kind of umbrella, regardless of what you'd like to call it.
