Good Morning,

I have a US 1861-66 5c Jefferson SC #76 stamp with $475 written on the back of it. It is not the "laid paper" variety - so is this the "black brown" variety? Maybe the cancel?

Please let me know what you believe it could be.

Thanks

Probably wishful thinking on the part of a previous owner, taking the highest value he/she could find for this particular stamp design. This looks like a normal #76 with poor centering and perf problems. The pen cancel is a detriment in terms of value, not an enhancement. This is not a high-value item.

I agree with Dudley - a normal #76 with perf problems.

Any chance you acquired this along with the 4c coil in your other post? The right perfs look suspect again.

Maybe it means 4.75?

I agree with Ray.
Just for amusement, I pulled the 1954 Scott US Specialized off the shelf. The used price for Scott 76 was $4.75.

Add: the price in the 1949 Specialized was $5.00, which seems to be the partially erased number under the $4.75

Thank you both, what would the stamp be worth today?

With it's condition (small tear top right) and centering (average), the pref problems upper right side and plus the pen cancel discount, maybe 5-10% of current catalogue.

Using the 2011 Specialized, VG-50 centering lists at $35, then with discounts for damage might put a value at about $4.75
Ironic
