Just as a point of information, Mein Kampf is still in print in large part because it has been used for decades as a textbook, and also the profits were given to charity. Something that could easily have been done here. |

Quote: This is 100% the case. In the age of social media mob justice, if you say "XXX should not be fired/jailed/killed" or don't immediately conform with the mob's accusatory stance, it means that by definition you therefore support any acts the person in question is accused of perpetrating. A lack of immediate condemnation and distancing yourself from the party implies you are in agreement with what the party thinks/says/did. It's all black & white. Gray is a thing of the past. Another example of a popular writer's work being removed completely from a website just from an accusation, and without a criminal conviction: https://www.themodernrogue.com/arti...an-brushwood Jim |

I would have never posted this info. It could destroy someone life. We dont know maybe his wife has charged him. Who knows for sure and it should not be publicly posted. Let the Law do that. |

. 1) Concern for "the court of public opinion" means that we are worrying about what other people are thinking, or might think. Seems reachy (to coin a word). 2) Letting the arrest & charges be known within SCF (and the larger hobby community) allows for gossip, but it also allows colleagues to show their personal support for the accused: by showing-up at court appearances, contacting & comforting the accused, etc. Not always a small thing, when you are in the dock ... which can be a pretty lonely place. Quote: ... Its news with potentially huge negative effects on the APS ... the black eye to the hobby, again, if he is found guilty, reaches far beyond the APS. It has also affected the APRL, and will likely affect the AAPE and the ASD&C magazine ..." 3) I think we might be taking ourselves a little too seriously. Cheers, /s/ ikeyPikey |

Steve was also expelled from AAPE.
The latest issue of 'The Philatelic Exhibitor' announces that Steve's book, 'The Path to Gold' is again available for sale on the AAPE website. The board made (the correct, imo) decision of separating Steve's personal issues from the inherent value of his already-published prose.
There were several murmurings in the same issue of perhaps allowing Steve to resume his membership at some undetermined point in the future, one of which was made by the new President, Mike Ley. I'd have no problem with this happening, although it would clearly be difficult for Steve to do and I wouldn't be surprised if he'd prefer to disassociate himself from any organizations aware of his circumstances.

Stating public facts which are in the legal system is not defaming anyone. It's speaking the truth. It's what any good newspaper would do. How those facts are perceived by a judge and jury may change our views, and it would not be wise to presume guilt or innocence, but knowing what's happening is essential. Prejudging a case is the thing we should not do, not refusing to be aware of it.. Of course everyone is "innocent until proven guilty" but that truism does not mean we put our heads in the sand and ignore what is happening. A few comments here suggest pretty strongly that it's a bad idea to even talk about such things. That is a very strange approach which suggests that whenever someone in our hobby runs afoul of the law rightly or wrongly, we really shouldn't talk about it. How strange that would be.
As for "protecting the hobby" by hiding bad news about the hobby, that's never acceptable. We're not children. That just means other news sources will reveal the news anyway. Hushing something up never works. As they say in politics, it's not so much the accusation, but the "cover-up" that does the real damage. |

We see trying to suppress bad news in all aspects of society. It is normal. Many crimes are suppressed to protect something. The hypocritical aspect is the same person's opinion can vary to either side (hide or expose) depending on the situation.

' An ethical standard not yet heard from requires that, falsehoods & half-truths aside, we only pass on fully truthful news when the listener has something material at stake.
I am not certain that every person on this forum (let alone anyone who googles by) has enough at risk to need to know this news.
At yesterday's APES meeting at Americover, there was some open discussion about whether/not people should buy & use the book. It seems that any money due the author was paid long ago, there is a healthy stock on-hand, and there is very-little-to-no chance that any money from any future sales will find its way to the author.
Cheers,

Instead of destroying copies of the book that they have, they should sell it off at a discount to anyone who wants a copy. They should also sticker a disclaimer into the book to the affect that the author is no longer a member in good standing or has been suspended, etc. |

Morning all,
Looking beyond this one incident to the bigger issue, should all members especially new applicants to membership, be subjected to the same background check as those applying to work with youth oriented organizations like the scouts, boys and girls clubs, 4H, etc.? And then there is the issue of renewing memberships or life memberships without first running a standard check for misdeeds?
Given the historical and more recent scandals in other religious and social groups based on misconduct not to mention the me too movement, the change has not been in human conduct but in how society defines it and deals with those who do it.
Sadly, it is easier to state this problem than solve it.

hey team. How did I get here??? What is this post for? It should be deleted. I stumble in here just taking it easy to this and within 5 minutes I know his childrens names his address his phone numbers his wifes name and how he doesnt live in silver spring after taking the plea deal of a years probation and one lousy day in jail. possibly a generous donation im sure. one day in jail. for a lesser charge.
This is not my business. The feeling in the pit of my stomach is saddening and devolutionary. Take down the post please. These children have suffered enough and this is on google search. please for the rights of children to live without the sins of those who abuse. Or are we just going perpetuate the cycle. Hurt people Hurt others.
Please dont be offended at my reply. but really guys?
Lets donate 5$ for everyone here to child abuse survivor proper group not one that makes you feel like you helped society by jabbing a few dollars at some random group that reinvests that money and blah blah blah. take a moment.
Just saying. have a thoughtful day guys But is he selling his stamps? |
