Hi

I have a question about valuing precancel stamps. I always used the PSS database to get a hint of the value of the stamp. But now I got two examples where seller requests a price much higher than value in the PSS database.

Enclosed is a picture of 10c Saginaw type 42, value in database 50c and priced to $25.
Next example Bay City type 841, value in database 20c each and priced to $5 each.

What is a resonable price?

Regards

A. Lundholm

I am not an expert on precancel pricing, but your to examples seem a bit out of line. Personally I would ignore that seller.
My interest lies in plate number coils mainly, and it is amazing how rare they can be if one looks at some of the prices asked!

Andklun - your estimate of the overpricing is right-on. Ebay sellers can be quite off base with asking prices for precancels. These you cite are within 100 times 'normal' retail, sellers often have them priced at 1000x or 10000x. 90% of ebay stamps will never sell at the offered price, which usually varies from 'one click above what anybody would pay' to insanity.

@pascoe: The PSS database is not a website. Rather the PSS has a free program that you use with databases (e.g., Bureau, T&T, etc.) sold by the PSS.

http://www.precancels.com/software/

Scroll down to Software Downloads to see what databases are available for purchase:

No worries. I have both the Bureau and T&T databases; I highly recommend both. But IIRC the T&T catalog/database is going to be updated this year.
