Between September and November of 1943, the Allied Military Government (British-American AMG) in Italy issued this set of nine stamps (Sc #s 1N1-9) for use by the civilian population. Michel's Suedeuropa catalog refers these stamps as "issue for Sicily" which was invaded in July 1943 by the Allies.

From history.com website, "On September 3, Montgomery's 8th Army began its invasion of the Italian mainland and the Italian government agreed to surrender to the Allies...In October, the Badoglio government declared war on Germany, but the Allied advance up through Italy proved to be a slow and costly process."

That stamp is hilarious! For those who can't read the German:

Your piece of the lawn!
Assemble your own football (soccer) field with another 5,023,128 stamps.

On December 13, 1985 Portugal issued this "A" rate (22.50 escudo) stamp (Sc #1660) on which the design is made up of a repeated, single string of words. Heavier shading brings out the post rider logo of the national postal and telecommunications system (CTT), and spacing between words creates some vertical lines.
