On May 3, 1983 Luxembourg issued this two-stamp set (Sc #s 691-2) depicting illuminated letters from the Giant Bible of Echternach Abbey. The stamps depict the illuminated letters "L" (8 fr) and "B" (35 fr). The Bible dates from ca. 1050-80. It is now at the National Library of Luxembourg.

From wikipedia, "An illuminated letter was usually the first letter of a page or paragraph. It was always enlarged and in color with gold applied in areas, while the rest of the text remained black."

The DDR issued this July 24, 1990 pro-literacy, charity stamp (Mi #3353) to publicize the U.N.'s International Literacy Year. Various alphabets are shown on the stamp.

Michel says this about the stamp, "The prepared stamp had to be given a new value imprint due to the currency conversion; the row values have not been adjusted to the changed nominal values." Michel is alerting collectors that it is normal for top marginal selvage from the pane of this issue to not be overprinted/revalued with the new, vertical row values.

Correction: The illuminated initial on the 8 fr stamp is "H", the first letter of haec 'these'.
