Hi Robert
The generally accepted definition of a true error stamp ate those which have been distributed to the Post Offices for sale to the public. The store owner did the right thing, if we support a market for material that goes out the back door of a printer then we are doing a disservice to the hobby. If the 'printers waste' market is supported, then it become even more likely that workers will intentionally make 'errors' for profit. Not good.

Some printer's waste was salvaged and finished as a cost savings measure and it was issued through the post office such as the U.S. sheet and coil waste issues while others from some other countries have come out unfinished from the printer's back door.

Hi jogil,
As far as I know all U.S. sheet and coil waste issues were distributed to Post Offices. Is there evidence that some of these went out the back door?

There are a couple of elements, aren't there? There's the printer's waste, which could be genuine misprints or deliberately misprinted for sale out the back-door. Then there's the "error" or individualised (perf varieties etc) material printed at the instigation of certain well-placed individuals. Now if the "inverted Jenny" were one of these, but escaped by accident to fall into the hands of Mr Robey ...

51studebaker: I meant from some other countries for printer's waste going out of the back door.

Around 1970 tons of printer's waste was poured out over us fromn the Pertjetakan Kebajoran where the Indonesian stamps are printed.

It shouldn't be difficult to find other examples...

Stamp collectors adore this! But who doesn't like circus attractions? :)

Everyone is talking about back door illegal stamps and how there are not viable Canada Post legitimate stamps..And not worth collecting...These people would be the first to acquire a back of door stamps as I created below...Who are we trying to fool...Just saying...I know I would.

I would not either.

And I will add that it disappoints me to see so many professional auction houses selling this material.

If one looks at their modern Canada sections, often you see the same exact "backdoor" stamps for sale over and over, from one auction to the next.

These are the firms that would have the greatest impact on de-legitimizing this fraud - but they don't, because of the money involved.

As a side note, there are rare occasions when non-legitimate stamps will have some historical value (for example the Connell stamps of Newfoundland - which should have all been destroyed). But that is more about interesting history adding value to an otherwise illegitimate stamp.

If the stamp passes through the Post Office, then it is fair game and an exciting find, otherwise not so much.

It is interesting how some catalogues list the printer's waste that went out the back door with a variety letter listing but totally ignore those related stamps that were sold through the post office by not giving them a variety letter listing .

Isn't flyspecking about noting every minor variety no matter how small?

Jogil..Here is my take on flyspecking..How I do flyspecking in 2 sentences..

1 - See what is there that should not be.
2 - See what is not there that should be.

A simple rule of thumb.

Very well said 3Dadeo, I totally agree with your comment. Personally, shame on those who allow printer's waste and forged stamps to circulate in our hobby.
There is nothing more rewarding to find a printing error in a fair way.

Dadeo,
minor typo...Connell was a New Brunswick stamp, not newfoundland.

Does anyone know if this type of fraud (strong word, I know) occurred during the SQ era? Philately was a Victorian hobby as well...
