Looks like it was torn from the pane by ripping against a ruler, and the ink cancel has been lightened.

Definitely genuine. Correct color shade. As Jim says, those rough edges are the result of being torn against a steel rule. You see that a lot on the large denomination imperfs.

At an asking price of less than half of Scott, the stamp is actually a pretty good deal, even with the lightened cancel (and assuming no other undisclosed faults).

Maybe you've been secretly helping to advertise certain stamps from this seller all along???

(just kidding)!

It's always possible that the cancel faded naturally.

With all due respect, take a good look at that right edge while enlarged. I'm seeing a lot of evenly spaced rounded nicks that make me a little nervous about saying not bogus.

Absolutely genuine. That is the kind of edge that happens when it's torn that way; those nicks will not gauge.

Legit imperf stamp, but on the large stamps you need to check for creases and thins.

It is a genuine imperforate stamp. Ragged margins like these are an excellent indicator of imperforate stamp and are, for all practical purples, impossible to duplicate when altering a perforated stamp to resemble one that is imperforate.

Also, for R97a, the shade of blue is correct for an imperforate stamp. Most of the perforated $15 stamps, R97c, are in different shades of blue.

Lastly, I doubt that the cancel has been lightened.

Why is it a good price? A look at the Siegel sales shows price realizations for a stamp of similar quality to be much lower.

You are talking about auction house vs retail dealer here, which is apples and oranges. Also most of the examples with lower prices have faults. Assuming that it really is sound, this is about a 35% of cat item; he is asking about $100 over that.
