Interesting article in the NYT on its history and a bit about the Philatelic Foundation. This particular stamp apparently had not been accounted for in years and was squirreled away in a family safety deposit box.

It should sell for north of $1.2 million. The condition and provenance are superb.

As it happens I saw Larry Lyons today, he was the one who told me about the article.

Is there another stamp as over-hyped and overpriced as this? I suppose the Chinese monkey stamp springs to mind, but it's consdierably cheaper if less attractive.

Only six unhinged Jenny Inverts, including this example, are recorded from the original sheet of 100. Based on its centering, bright colors, and its pristine gum, the PF awarded the stamp the Grade of 90 "XF"

From an email from the PF.

Nice stamp.

I wonder how PF graded this stamp...was the criteria the other C3 inverts in the sheet or was it against all C3 (including normal stamps)?

If #66 ever shows up, is it still stolen property? Were the other three confiscated?
