Hi Partime. Your July 6, 1939 Philadelphia autogiro cover is a first flight. It is listed in the American Air Mail Catalog as autogiro flight number 22. There were 28,171 pieces flown which makes it quite common. It is a nice looking example with the 6 cent airmail stamp and the airmail saves time machine cancel.

I finally found one of the very first experimental helicopter first flights from 1946 in Los Angeles. Not in the best shape, but I'll take it. This route used the big Sikorskys, flown by Army Air Forces pilots. Any idea where "Trans Office Air Mail Field" would be?

Based on publicity photos (and the bldgs in the background) always assumed the location of "Trans Office Air Mail Field" was the historic Mines Field (Los Angeles Municipal Airport). Located along Imperial Hwy, on the south side of current LAX. With its distinctive tower and Hanger One.
