I think the lines are 12mm apart, 2.5mm high serifs

These are PSS Type 225.

Strange, my PSS Town and Type Catalog (7th edition) isn't listing type 225 for Des Moines. Can it be that they are missing from the catalog for that town?

I believe they are Bureau precancels, style 43.

Is it possible to know how many precancels appear on Martha Washington, Please? (Sc#805)

Rod, there are literally thousands of different cities/types on Scott 805. My collection, which I'm always adding to, has over 500 of them now, and there are many, many states/cities not yet represented.

Because the field is so vast, many precancel collectors start by just adding the bureau precancels to their collection and leave off all the locals, which is where the vast majority of precancels come from.

If you haven't picked one up yet, get the Precancel Stamp Society's Town & Type catalog.

I thought I was doing OK with around 50

I intend to use Steiner, but not conversant with the Code as yet.

The PSS catalog and Scott U.S. Specialized both note:
404 different Bureau precancels of Scott 805, the sheet format.
179 different Bureau precancels of Scott 840, the coil format.
There would be many thousand more local precancels on (mostly) Scott 805.
Locally precanceled coils are less common.
rod222 shows a mixture of the first three types together.

The Mt Morris, IL and the Shreveport, LA are local precancels.
