Fortresses & Castles

When I first came upon this card, I figured it was a fantasy image. Not so much.

Der Hohentwiel im Jahre 1800

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hohentwiel ... the mountain & the fortress

https://www.festungsruine-hohentwiel.de/en/home/ ... the fortress ruins

http://www.bodensee.eu/en/what-to-e...twiel_poi525 ... more about the fortress ruins

https://www.hohentwiel.com/en-us/fa.../h?fen.aspx# ... an inland cruise ship that bears the name

http://goscf.com/t/8286 ... a related post, but in a poorly-named thread in the wrong forum

Q/ Any more out there?

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey

Ikey, impressive! I grew up around and worked in castles as a young man so they speak to me as it were. One small item though, could you edit your post so it shows cards as the subjects, rather than stamps?

Peter

Here's four different postcards all of Culzean castle built between 1777-1792.
This castle was also depicted on the back of the Scottish 5 pound banknote starting in 1972-?.

Cheers, Bill

Another castle featured on a banknote, postcard canceled 1911.
I'd sooner have the banknote from 1935.

Cheer's, Bill

Nagoya-jô (Nagoya Castle), one of Japan's most famous castles. It was built by Ieyasu, the first Tokugawa shôgun, for his ninth son. Originally completed in 1612, the castle has been rebuilt as a result of its destruction by American bombs in 1945 and by Godzilla in 1964. I got to visit it on Midori no Hi (Greenery Day) in 2007.

The Imperial Castle of Nuremberg (Kaiserburg Nürnberg), probably the city's most iconic site. Seriously damaged by air raids in 1944–45, it was reconstructed and restored over the course of the next thirty years. The postcard is from a booklet that I bought when I was there with the AATG/PAD Preisträgerprogramm in 1984.

And here's the castle on a couple of older postal cards.

Bavaria, 1906 (Michel #PP5)

Germany, 1938 (Michel #P272)
