After many years away (30+) from the hobby, I have decided to dust off the old collection and just focus on Nova Scotia cancellations and #15 5 Cent Beavers. I quickly realized that I need some specialist publications on cancels, can anyone recommend books to search for online? Tks!

Hi Lars, and welcome to the forum. One quick thing you can do is search this forum. Nova Scotia is very popular and several books have been mentioned in the past. The "search" button is on every page on the right hand top, where the login is

Welcome back to the hobby Lars. I see your from Kingston. I was at the Valley show this May. Wonderful small town show and I will be there in the spring next year, god willing.

Is it only older or all Nova Scotia cancellations you are looking for? Try these books below. Some are available for viewing from your local libraries or through interlibrary loan network.

The Nova Scotia Post:its offices, masters and marks 1700-1867 by J.J.MacDonald -1984

Nova Scotian Postal History by L.B. MacPherson in 1982

There was a 4 volume set of paperbacks of postmarks of Cape Breton put out by Carl Munden in the 1986.

I believe I have a copy of Macdonald/Mundens books.

As well there is now a new Pictorial cancellation booklet just released in September at Novapex by Hugh Rathbun of Halifax.

I collect cancels mainly of Cape Breton Island, but of course have others of Nova Scotia.
Hope this is of use.

Hello Lars714. Welcome back to the hobby.
To get a good list of available material I suggest that you visit the website of the Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation. The catalogue of the library is on line. I just did a quick search using 'Nova Scotia' as keywords and was rewarded with 107 hits. It may not be exactly what you are looking for it is a good start.
I also suggest that you contact our research librarian, Kathy Hartley, and get on her email list for 'Friends of the Library' and that will earn some level of borrowing privilege.
If you ever get into Toronto, come and visit the VGG Foundation library. It is an outstanding resource and it is FREE!
