This 3 cent was not used as a revenue, it paid the postage for mailing the policy. There was no possible 3 cent tax rate applicable here.

I wasn't interested in these types of lots as that's a bit outside my ballpark right now.

I just happened to see them and knew we had collectors who were looking for this kind of material, so I posted links for them to check out, along with the search I'd done which netted them.

There may very well be a revenue stamp affixed to the policy on the inside. These insurance policies with revenue stamps affixed as well as postage stamps also paying postage are quite collectible. I've seen them sell for $100-200 at auction.

Sellers/dealers frequently try to sell them as an illegal/improper use of postage stamps as revenues.

Alas, most dealers don't know any better. In my opinion the second item is seriously overpriced, but I guess we will find out.

I have a single frame exhibit of the Ohio Farmers Insurance Company. (http://www.rfrajola.com/Liebson3/Liebson3.htm) I would agree that the price on this one is aggressive (my opinion, anyway) but I think mailed insurance policies are quite an interesting creature.

The Ohio Farmers Insurance Company went on to be the first significant user of window envelopes (so far as I can determine) in the 1870s. There are also several scarce revenue stamped paper items from the company as well (imprinted revenues on the policies).....
