Hi

C23 listed in Scott with two shades of blue: Ultramarine and Dark Blue. I've been digging around on the internet trying to find some examples to distinguish between the two and haven't had success as far as this stamp goes. If someone can look at this image and give an opinion as to the shade of blue my level of frustration would be greatly reduced.

A larger scan would be useful but be aware that differences in lighting and appearance on computer monitors will easily throw off the color we see. This I believe is accurate for online color, lot 523:

When comparing, cover over the red eagle and central part and compare colors in the darkest parts of the design, in the top tablet and the lower corners.

John Hotchner wrote about this in the July 17, 2017 US Notes column in Linn's; here is a link.

He did a earlier column on May 15, 2017, but I don't have a link to it. Perhaps with some research you can locate it.

Thank you. I was able to locate it. Interesting perspective on this particular issue. The problem I have encountered was mentioned by hy-brasil in his post. Computer images don't always reflect actual colors. Perfect example is the shade of red on my posted image and rogdcam's. Can there be two shades of carmine?

What are people's thoughts on these two stamps?
