Luck was on my side and I acquired this for opening bid plus shipping.

I wanted it to go along with a cover I purchased earlier this year with Stephen Peery Attorney at law in the return address. It was addressed to his daughter Bessie Peery and postmarked in 1886.

The check

The cover

I know that Stephen Peery was President of the First National Bank of Trenton, Missouri charter # 3957. Its charter was approved January 9, 1889 and later liquidated December 23, 1893.

The FNB and the competing Grundy County of Trenton (Charter # 3946) liquidated the same day and the resulting institution was the Trenton National Bank (Charter #4933).

Always nice to see things go to a good home. (I was the seller.)

Cool I didn't even make the connection that you were the seller.

I wonder if there are any used examples floating around out there?

There are used copies of that check, but all of the ones I've seen are made over to Phoenix, Arizona and used when Peery had moved there. The Peery bunch is quite interesting. You can read all about them in The Check Collector magazine, Issue 106, which you can find online at https://asccinfo.com/open-reading-room.
