Seals were certainly quite common.

The letter locking is interesting, and I can't say that I have any examples of that. This is the kind of thing that (kind of like private perforations) one sometimes needs to be looking for, in order to find. The next time I go through my covers, I'll keep this in mind.

There's a retro stationery shop near me that still sells seals and sealing wax. They even have a quill-sharpening service!

I have some sticks of sealing wax, along with a Mickey Mouse seal that I've had since I was a little kid (circa 1970), but I haven't used them in quite a few years.
