If I'm not mistaken, isn't this a postal cancel? If so, how unusual would that be?

Unusual, yes. Valuable, no. Now if it were still tied to a cover, that would be a different story.

with that centering of the portrait and type of csnccel I would suspect the legitimacy of the invert. close examination would be required.
