Current Scott Value For Mint Wine Stamps Maybe A Bit "Off"?

One hundred mint copies of RE144 were offered on the 'bay recently, in the form of a complete pane.

The current Scott catalog value is $9.00 each.

The stamps sold for just over 53 cents each, or around 6 percent of the catalog value.

Maybe at least some of the values for some of the mint wine stamps need to be adjusted a bit?

I think all of the mint wine stamps that were disgorged by the National Postal Museum are very overvalued in Scott.

Give me a nicely vineyard cancelled wine stamp. Beats out a mint wine stamp any day for my collection.

I would agree many of them are still overvalued, but the Scott people don't seem to get it (or is it the people who feed them the info for this section as I think they rely a lot on certain dealers for the revenues)

The sub-$100 catalog value mint wine stamps seem to be considerably overpriced in Scott, IMO. The ones in italics above $100 still seem to sell well and at good percentages; I don't think as many of those were sold at the NPM auctions (or at least have not made their way into the market in quantities sufficient to materially affect demand).

I have been whining about this exact subject for quite a while.

For those of you who contribute to the Scott catalog and pricing - please make a point of highlighting these prices being out of whack.

Not sure if this seller is the winner from last month's auction, but one of the big name auctions had a large lot of full sheets of wine stamps. Total "cat value" was 10s of thousands if memory serves me.

Scott needs to be careful of prices when you can buy multiple sheets of a stamp in the BOB world. Simply little market for that much material! That said, get China or India interested in them and we can all retire!

in the area of wine stamps I would think that any existing sheets will not be broken up as there is no strong demand for singles or multiples and no position pieces to encourage break up for economic return. for most bob material that exists in sheets or large multiples I think the foregoing is true.
as for pricing in scott's in general I think they do not reflect the true market conditions for most material, not only wines. for rare items auction pricing may be ok, but for the vast number of average items they reflect a starting point for bargaining.

Its the sub $100 ones we are talking about. There are large quantities of many of them sloshing around the market. You don't see big batches of $100+ ones.

IMO I thought that the NPM deaccessions should have been stamped Specimen or NPM or something to differentiate them from circulated wine stamps and that Scott should have had one price for the circulated stamps and one price for the "samples".

That was initially proposed, but there was a backlash against it.
