My brain isn't making any connection to the third word written above the date line:

Office Chippewa ?????

It almost looks like "Mail", but the term "Office Chippewa Mail" doesn't make sense to me.

Any ideas?

Click on the image below to see it full size.

Thanks.

Actually, "Mine" looks good, although I find it more likely to be Michigan than Wisconsin, as the city is Marquette.

According to the 1862 list of POs there was a Chippewa in Cass County Minnesota, Wayne County Ohio, and New Castle County Delaware. A Chippewa Falls and Chippewa City in Chippewa County Wisconsin and a Chippewa Lake in Douglas County Minnesota

Don't forget Marquette Wisconsin, both as a city and county. It is most likely Chippewa Mine.

"Office (of the) Chippewa Mine" is a business name located in Marquette.

There is a William Putnam Spalding (1822-1913) buried in Sault Saint Marie, Chippewa County, MI, which may very well be the signee.
Both Sault Saint Marie and Marquette are along the north shores of the Upper Peninsula.

Q/ What about Chippewa Minn?

Those two-letter state abbreviations are a the new-fangled thing.

Ikey, Huh? It takes only a simple manual reading to see that the word is "Mine".

"Mine" was my first read, John, but the various speculations later in the thread got me over-thinking.

Cheers,
