mine looks a little darker and sharper than what I'm seeing ... is it typical variation? The stamp is on a cover with very blurry date so no help there.

Can you send an image of the entire, and can you get a better scan of the stamp?
It does look odd, my first reaction is that its re-backed, as the margin's don't match the stamp (internally it is whiter than the paper it is on).
And it's placement in the square vs. the cancellation look suspect.

hmmm might be my scanner not scanning colors properly

here's another scan taken on a different setting ... doesn't look so odd in this one ... mystery solved I suppose (feeling a bit foolish
)
