Hello, All!

I'm using the 2010 Scott Catalogue to ID French stamps.

At the end of the 1876-77 A15 Type II issues, it says, "Beware of French Colonies #31, #35". What the heck does this mean? Is there a numbered list that I need to reference?

Any help is *much* appreciated!
- Jen

First off. Welcome.

What does it show for #31 and #35? Possibility of them being incorectly identified or altered to look like others in this list shown. Cautionary notice.

There are subtle differences in color between some of the France v. French Colonies issues which can have significant implications for valuation. I'm sure some of our more knowledgeable community members will chime in soon with some helpful input.

Hi, No1.

France Scott 31 & 35 are of a completely different stamp.
As for Scott 31 & 35 of one of the colonies, it doesn't specify which colony to look at, so I think I'm misinterpreting it.

Thank you!

The reference is to the general issues for the French Colonies, not an individual colony.

Xiewadu, just got it. French colonies issues appear to look like the French issues but are different altogether.

Thank you all very much!

Funny, this reminded me of some code/software I once read, deeply internal to the operating system I was studying at the time. Someone put a comment in that said: "if you are reading this, you are in trouble".

Postmarks can also assist in distinguishing these stamps.

@txstamp, that's funny! I've seen some fun comments in code that makes me wonder how much was written when they were punchdrunk.
