Help With Pricing 804-831 Fd Covers For Sale

Help please: I am not a cover collector but have what appears to be pretty much complete from 1938 to late 90s. There are also a few specialty covers like Russian FDCs of the US Russia space mission. I have been offered in the area of 10¢ each for the lot so have decided to keep most of them for my own collection. However, I am still selling off a large collection that my son-in-law inherited. So in order to maximize the dollars for him I am finding some that in my non-cover collecting mind think should be worth more than the 10¢ each and would like to put them up for sale. The first of these is Scott numbers 804-831 complete. They are only stamped First Day of Issue and have hand written addresses on them. No cachets - did they even utilize them in 1938? Anyway can someone please guide to a fair starting price on these 28 covers. I would like to sell them as a single lot.

Yes you can find these with cachets.

Addressed, no cachets, and missing the dollar values? Start 'em low. It's hard to sell common FDCs even unaddressed and with cachets.

The offer of 10 cents a cover for these types of First Day Covers (no cachets, addressed, missing the high face value stamps) is not unrealistic. You can buy this sort of thing wholesale for something in that range. There are still some active First Day Cover collectors and for certain FDS with certain rare cachets in perfect condition and without addresses they pay several dollars to more for them, but the lot you describe would not be one of them. Modern FDCs (1930s to the present) is a situation where supply dramatically exceeds demand for most all but the rare ones and so now is a good time to be having the fun of buying and building a collection while selling one can be disappointing. My suggestion is to group your FDCs that you want to sell in logical groups such as the one you describe and put them up on eBay with staring bids of $1 and see what they bring. Collectors there will bid up whatever you are selling to within a good ballpark of the current commercial value. If you have older FDCs from the 1800s through to the 1920s or so you would likely get good prices and not so much concern about cachets and being addressed so long as the cancel is very clear.
