Two interesting postcards with stamps from the Italian Socialist Republic (Bolzano-Bozen Province) to Stampfl Austria.

I am uncertain on the language of the handwritten notes (German?)

Wiki lists several languages for Austria including German and Austro-Bavarian. Maybe there is an expert translator lurking on SCF? (I tried Google translate but was unsuccessful)

The daffodils are beautiful and so is the landscape
(but I cannot understand the blank space on the right margin. What is this for?)

Hopefully some translations will shed some light on the purpose of the card and context.

Please share your thoughts and insights.

The post card was sent to Vandoies di Sotto (Unter Vintl) Pustertal
Bolzano (South Tirol) Italy.
South Tirol was part of Austria until the end of the first
world war when it was handed over to Italy by the Allies.

Austrians actually read, write and speak German although
with a dialect.

The PC appears to be addressed to a Freulein(Miss)Hammy Webhofer
who lives with family Stampfl

The 1944 PC is written in normal German script
but the 1945 one is written in Kurrent/Sütterlin
which is a German script no longer in use.

Postcard 1:

Bozen 15.5.1944
Bolzano, Monday May 15, 1944
Liebe Hanny!
Dear Hanny,
Deinen Brief erhalten. Freut mich dass Du Besuch von Deinen Leuten hast.
Received your letter. Glad you have visit from your folks.
Putting it off until mid-June is fine with me, even better, especially until the Saturday surprise.
Everything went well for me. Coincidentally, was away from Bolzano as early as Saturday 10 clock.
Was in Eppan during the incident and only came back early this morning.
When I get out, of course, I also take Monday off; but will in any case write before that.
Inzwischen recht herzlichste Grüsse an Dich, Fredi, Elsa, Wiedenhofer und Hueber in Terenten, sowie alle Bekannten, Emi.
In the meantime, best regards to you, Fredi, Elsa, Wiedenhofer and Hueber in Terenten, as well as all acquaintances, Yours, Emi.

Postcard 2:

30.7.1945
July 30, 1945
Liebe Hanny!
Dear Hanny,
If nothing happens in the meantime, I intend to come to Vintl / Vandoies on Saturday August 11.
Hast Du meinen letzten Brief erhalten?
Did you receive my last letter? Still waiting for an answer concerning my friend's baths here.
Sei so freundlich und antworte mir möglichts bald. Auf baldiges Wiedersehen und recht herzlichste Grüsse
Be so kind and answer me as soon as possible. See you soon and best regards
Emilie Giorgelli,
Bolzano, Via Dante, 32

For Vintl / Vandoies see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vintl

It is interesting to note that stamps of the Italian Social (not Socialist) Republic were in use in Bolzano as late as July 31, 1945.

For the Italian Social Republic see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itali...ial_Republic

Quote: I cannot understand the blank space on the right margin. What is this for?

The blank space on the right margin of the landscape reproduction is there just because the artwork failed to cover the full space available.

Turtle - it's "Social" republic, not "Socialist" - nothing socialist about Salo!

First of all, thank you Florian for the translation! So interesting to read.

And yes a bad typo on my part... Italian Social Republic it is!
A bad mistake considering the difference.

I cannot edit it after 1 day...but will ask the current moderator to :-)

Thank you everyone for the great replies and info.

Turtle2900 - You're welcome. Glad to have been of help.

lithograving - Thank you very much for your e-mail. I´ve corrected http://goscf.com/t/67204#587929 on your advice replacing "history / lesson /" with "incident" and rewording the translation.
