I have a stamp less envelope I recently purchased. I am trying to find out about the postal markings and information about the people writing and written to in this short letter? Your stampless folded letter has the classic double-oval handstamp from Utica, New York which are also known in red and black. In this era, mail was sent un-paid (the recipient paying the freight)...the 'V' in circle signifies the rate of 5-cents.
I think the Doolittle referenced was a partner in the firm. The letter's author isn't shown in the image. Matteson is an interesting historical individual and his signature may be on the letter. Perhaps the OP will oblige.
