Hello fellow Philatelists,
I have a question on an item I recently purchased, namely a 3p New South Wales stamp.
When sorting it into my UK Dominion Album I noticed that these stamps also exist with some numerical watermarks.
As far as I know the numerical watermarks are supposed to represent the value of the stamp ("3" watermark on 3p Stamp, etc.).
If im wrong on this one please advise.
So I checked my Stamp and realized that there seems to be a faint outline of a "2" watermark on my 3p stamp.

Am I wrong? Am I seeing things?
Any help is appreciated!

ps. Please forgive the quality of the scans, I pulled them off the eBay auction. My scanner right now is on strike, I cant seem to get it to work on my wifi network....

One more question:
I paid about $1.11 for this stamp. Is that price ok for this one?

The price you paid, is OK, and it should be,
Regret is painful, just accept you paid what you thought was fair at the time, and move on.

PS: Possibly, you paid more than $1.11, given shipping was a further impost.
I see a definite "3"

@rod22
Thanks for your response.
This was part of a larger Lot of about 10 stamps for which I paid 80c in shipping total.

I purchased the stamp without knowing of the watermarks at all, so I did get what I wanted, so no regrets there. If it turns out to be a watermark it would be an added bonus I guess.

Interesting that you see a "3", can you explain how you see a definitive "3"?
Maybe you are seeing something im missing.

Let me try to show why I see a "2":
I see something of a bottom bar shown by bottom arrow (This is why I dont see how it can be a "3" because to me that bar is quite definitive and would not fit a "3" watermark) and a curve, shown by upper arrow, that would fit a "2".

Thanks!

LiV,
let's wait until you get the stamp, and check for the Wmk
Otherwise we can only speculate.

Maybe the specialists are able to correct me,
but I see your stamp can only fit Sc# 37A or 37D or Wmk 6 or Perf 12
A Wmk 2 does not exist.

No, all I do is place the stamp in a polypropylene bag, with Wmk fluid and scan,
You may be unable to do this, depending on what you have, lighter fluid will ID,
or, if you are game, place it in cold water.
All are your decisions.

Unfortunately, I have no image of the double lined "3" to see its design.

Be alert : your bottom line you think is part of a "2" could be the Pmk showing through to the back.

I might have to try one of those methods to check.

I also am almost 100% sure that it is not from the cancellation.
The line lies directly on the 5th perforation pin, counted from bottom.
On the front side the cancellation is very faint with the line broken multiple times on the 5th perforation pin.

I will have to check with one of your methods.
It might end up being a fluke most likely.

I'd soak the stamp just long enough to remove the hinge. NSW 3d diadems will happily cope with a quick soak. The watermark should be more apparent while it's wet too. It might be marginal lettering.

The chunky perfs make it look like a perf. 10, first used on 3d diadems in 1880. If it is p.10 the stamp couldn't have a double-lined numeral watermark.

A double-lined 3 watermark from my collection for comparison. I'm still thinking the OP's stamp is a perf. 10 with marginal lettering.

LordInVader,

Your watermark is Crown over NSW.

Here is a clearer example of the watermark next to your stamp:

Nice scan Bobby!
ergo, Scott #54 or #63 depending on the Crown shape.
Still a choice of around 15 stamps depending on Perforation.
