Not full of insight! I don't think that any monarch since George V has genuinely collected stamps, but at least they haven't wanted to sell the collection, as Edward VIII reportedly did.

Well, at least she knows it exists, and seems to like that it does. Small victories...

Is the collection a national treasure or a personal one? Also, seeing one's portrait and that of one's relatives on many of the stamps must feel like looking at a family photo album of sorts.

I guess that I confused it with The British Library National Stamp Collection.

A good read is The Queen's Stamps: The Authorised (Authorized) History of the Royal Philatelic Collection by Nicholas Courtney.

I have a rather musty copy of Wilson's 1952 book about the collection, which I have trouble lifting.

Stupid.
The Queen has not "earned" 100 Million from her stamps. Her collection may be "worth" 100, but that's a different story.
The Queen's collection is personal, not public and things she buys are with personal, not public funds. She (through the Keeper of the Collection) has sold some items from the collection to fund other purchases, just like most collectors.
However, always good to see an article in a mainstream (?) publication that does not paint stamp collecting and stamp collectors as weird.
C.

I agree, the Courtney book is quite good.
I always thought Her Majesty should have bought the 1858 1 magenta when it came up for auction. Her collection would have been an appropriate place for it to live (IMO)

And the article is in "Cosmopolitan," that scholarly resource!
