On June 3 1965,NASA-KSC published an announcement that the Kennedy Space Center would be opening a postal facility on July 1,1965. This would be a branch of the Orlando,Florida post office. Two zip codes where given to the new P.O.,32815 for the Space Center installation and 32899 for official NASA mail. The first in a series of cachets was released to commemorate the opening. Typical releases where to commemorate NASA manned space program launch events ,however other events where also captured within this series i.e. launch of Surveyor C, Fire prevention week,Lunar Landing Anniversary's etc.Now canceled examples and philatelically prepared examples in which the cachet was applied come in to play here on some issues. For example the AS 501 Apollo 4 Mission, Quantity canceled 34,000 of which 9,685 had the cachet applied. For the P.O. opening day variety 7,116 where canceled with only about 3000 philatelic examples. From this group there are examples of both AM and PM canceled varieties. In addition red essay types exist, the blue ink types where officially released for this occasion. Enjoy.
