These sometimes turn up in the bottom of shoeboxes at auction.

These are noted in Georges Chapier's
"Les Timbres de Fantaisie" 9 varieties (colours) are noted
Their existence was noted as early as 1871 and are described as essays.

At the bottom what looks like "ell spamm"
is Ellas Gramm or Greece letter.

very nice rod, they all seem to be of the same value "20" so am wondering why of different colors? the color serves some purpose?

Not sure Nic, but my guess would be, as they are "essays" they would have been placed in front of a committee of some sort, to discuss what stamp
(colour)was to be more appropriate (colour trials)
They were never used, so we collectors are left to muse over what may have been.
